North Point, Hong Kong

North Point began as a barren coastal outpost east of the former Victoria City. During early years of British colonial rule, a coal-fired power station generating electricity for the Victoria City was built on land resulting from reclamation, hence the street names inspired by electric power and illumination, namely Electric Road, Power Street, Tin Chiu Street, etc. After the war, Chinese immigrants and post-war refugees settled in the area to find work at factories and dockyards further eastward, eventually leading to the construction of the North Point Estate in 1957 to provide public housing with sanitation infrastructure for blue-collar tenants. Now an aging inner city, various parts of North Point have been undergoing redevelopment, but some other parts continue to retain their mid-century charm.
