The Kowloon Peninsula is situated across the Victoria Harbour from Hong Kong Island, extending from the Chinese southern coast. It had been ceded to Britain in 1860 under the Convention of Peking, then returned to China in 1997. After WWII, post-war industrialization attracted more workers to settle in the cramped public housing below the Lion Rock. The predominantly working-class Chinese neighbourhoods never quite assimilated into British rule at the time, and continue to be blue-collar havens today. That said, there are also some parts of Kowloon that have become quaint enclaves home to much more affluent residents, such as Kowloon Tong, Homantin Hill, Kadoorie Hill and the more recently founded West Kowloon.
